H.R. Kean makes propulsive, character-driven films. She slingshots audiences through a day in a character’s life using momentum, friction, and music — then earns quiet, emotional moments where characters confront who they really are. She’s drawn to emotionally guarded characters, collisions with expectation, and moments of recognition that linger long after the story ends.

Raised in Central California, Kean grew up immersed in theater, watching her parents conduct choirs and direct operas. She began performing at age three and went on to study Dramatic Arts at UC Santa Barbara, graduating with Honors. After moving to Los Angeles, she trained at the Stuart Rogers Studio and co-founded the film collective TheFilmKind in 2014.

Her work has screened at film festivals, won an Audience Choice Award, and been acquired by colleges across the United States. She directed her first feature film, The Country They Call Life, starring The Man in the High Castle’s Cara Mitsuko and Jeremy Roberts, which had its world premiere at the Phoenix Film Festival.

She has run three Los Angeles Marathons and plays piano.
